The Riebeek Valley encompasses Riebeek Kasteel and Riebeek West as the two main areas of the Valley. Located in the Western Cape Province, it is believed to be one of the oldest areas in the country. At just approximately 80 kms north-east of Cape Town the towns are easily accessible to tourists and is popular for day visitors from the Mother City as well.
In 1661 Commander Jan van Riebeeck under the leadership of Corporal Pieter Cruythoff, set off on an expedition of inland discovery in the direction of Paardeberg. When they ascended a mountain (Kasteelberg Mountain) overlooking the fertile area of the Riebeek Valley, they then named the one town Riebeek Kasteel in honour of the Commander.
